Faceboook shut down rumour: source and reactions

The rumor about the "March 15, 2011" Facebook shutdown is spreading like fire on the internet, while keeping many Facebook users guessing and worried.

This rumor was ignited on Saturday by an article published on the ‘Weekly World News’, a news-parody website claiming to be the source of “The World’s Only Reliable News."

Here is a snippet from the article:
PALO ALTO, CA –Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down in March. Managing the site has become too stressful.
“Facebook has gotten out of control,” said Zuckerberg in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office, “and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.”
Zuckerberg went on to explain that starting March 15th, users will no longer be able to access their Facebook accounts.
“After March 15th the whole website shuts down,” said Avrat Humarthi, Vice President of Technical Affairs at Facebook. “So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You won’t be able to get them back once Facebook goes out of business.”
As at the time of posting this, the Facebook team is yet to officially say anything about the rumor via the official Facebook Page and the official Facebook blog.

If one is to follow what Facebook published about "Facebook misinformation" at http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=7830237130 then, I guess there is no need to worry as there might be no truth in this rumor. Nevertheless, I hope Facebook will come out and deny the rumor officially as soon as possible.

Most of my Facebook friends have been reacting differently to this rumor. Most Bloggers at "BloggersLab" are saying it will really affect their blogs' traffic. A friend even told me he will stop using internet if Facebook shuts down for real while another one is still wondering how she will be able to handle loneliness without Facebook. I even read somewhere online that a parent said she will be happy as she will be able to have more time to talk with her children instead of them pressing the phone, facebooking all day.

Well, as for me, if it happens, life continues. Nevertheless, I have started downloading all my pictures and favorite Facebook videos to my laptop.

With a company estimated at being worth over $50 billion, I am wondering why the owner would choose to suddenly shut it down instead of selling it off. If this is to happen for real in some part of the world, trust me, some people will say the owner is under spiritual attack ( "aaye n se" in Yoruba)..lol

If you are a Nigerian, you can say "NO" to it at : http://www.facebook.com/pages/50-Million-Nigerians-Saying-NO-To-Facebook-Shut-Down/152989851417921

Just relax your mind, I dont think it is real. Keep enjoying Facebook.
