Christmas is fast approaching - and many Nigerian Bulk SMS websites are currently rolling out adverts on Google, Facebook, Newspapers etc, trying to convince Nigerians to buy bulk sms from them at very cheap rates during this Christmas/New Year season. In other to boost their Christmas sales in Nigeria, they've got to let Nigerians know that they are the cheapest in the country.
As a bulkSMS user, you check the pricing page of the Nigerian Bulk SMS service providers and wonder why some are selling BulkSMS as high as N2 per sms, the same bulkSMS some other bulk sms sites claim to be selling at N1 per sms.
If you don't know whatz up, you won't know that buying from a site that sells at N1/sms unit might even be the same as buying from a site that sells at N1.5 per sms unit, while buying from a site that sells at 90k per sms unit might even be more expensive than the site selling at N1.5 per sms unit.
From my years of experience in Bulk sms business in Nigeria and observations of the pricing of bulk sms resellers in Nigeria, I want you to know that majority of Nigerian bulksms sites that claim to be selling sms at N1 per sms make use of the "unit" pricing system. Guess what, not all the sms providers make use of the "unit" pricing system.
If you study the pricing page of sites using the "unit" system carefully, the honest and straight-forward ones will state clearly the number of units that will cost you to send one page of sms despite paying N1 per sms unit.
For example, Site A might state on the pricing page that you can buy sms at N1 per sms but will make it clear to you that one page of sms to one MTN number will cost you 1.5 units of sms, one page of sms to one Airtel number will cost you 1.5 units of sms etc.
I even saw an advert of a bulk SMS site on Google this evening, claiming to be selling sms at the rate of 90k per sms. On checking the pricing page of the site, I saw clearly there that a page of text message to Airtel takes 1.75 units of SMS while a page of text message to Glo takes 1.75 units of SMS and MTN takes 1.75 units of SMS. Just Imagine that!
Now, let's carry out some calculation....
Now let's assume you buy N3,000 worth of sms from site A selling at N1 per sms unit. This means you will get 3000 sms units from the site. If the site charges 1.5 sms units to send one page of sms to one MTN number, that means you can use the 3000 sms units to send one page of sms to 2, 000 MTN numbers.
If you buy N3, 000 worth of sms from site B selling at N1.5 per sms unit. This means you will get 2000 sms units from the site. If the site is not using the unit pricing system, hence charging 1 sms unit for a page of sms to an MTN number, that means you can use the 2000 sms units to send one page of sms to 2, 000 MTN numbers.
If you buy N3, 000 worth of sms from site C selling at 90k per sms unit. This means you will get 3333 sms units from the site. If the site charges 1.75 sms units to send one page of sms to one MTN number, that means you can use the 3333 sms units to send one page of sms to 1, 900 MTN numbers.
Looking closely at the calculation above, you will see that buying from site A that sells at N1 per sms unit is same as buying from site B that is selling at N1.5 per sms unit, while buying from site B is even cheaper than buying from site C selling at 90k per sms unit.
So, when next you see a Nigerian bulk sms provider claiming to be selling bulk sms at 60k per sms unit, please ask them how many units they charge per one page of sms to one phone number.
I hope this helps.
